Target audiences
The sigma books are usually aimed at an academic readership in universities and research institutions, at students and practitioners who need well-founded, precise and up-to-date information for their professional activities. However, quite a few publications also appeal to readers outside academic contexts – for example, employees in associations, trade unions and citizens’ initiatives or works and staff councils – who want to acquire solid, in-depth knowledge about important social developments and contemporary problems. The edition sigma programme at Nomos currently includes over 500 social science textbooks. An average of 25 to 30 new publications are added each year.
In one sentence: Books for a better society
The not entirely unironic claim refers to the claim that social science research should focus on solving social problems and provide knowledge that can help answer open questions about social change. Our claim is to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about “the better society” by making better books.
