Medialisation and mediatisation

Two approaches in media and communication studies

The 4th, updated edition of Professor Dr Thomas Birkner’s book ‘Medialisation and Mediatisation‘ has been published! The book centres on the question of media change and social change. To this end, it draws on two established approaches within media and communication studies: medialisation and mediatisation. Whilst mediatisation research focuses on changes in communication in people’s everyday lives, medialisation research examines the influence of the mass media in specific areas of society such as politics and academia.

The work explains the origins of each approach, its key studies and findings, and seeks to integrate the different approaches – qualitative versus quantitative – more closely than has been the case to date.

More about the series

The new edition of this work is being published in our series, edited by Prof. Dr Dr Patrick Rössler and Prof. Dr Hans-Bernd Brosius Concepts. Approaches in Media and Communication Studies .

Each volume in this series focuses in depth on a single approach to research into media use and effects. Following a standard structure, they are intended to:

🔹outline the historical development,

🔹provide basic definitions,

🔹make theoretical distinctions,

🔹explain the rationale behind relevant research methods and

🔹compile empirical findings.

Furthermore, they also address controversies and recent developments, and establish links with theoretically related concepts.

The Nomos textbook series aims not only to provide academics with a solid yet in-depth overview of a field of research that goes well beyond a summary essay: the volumes are also intended to offer a well-founded introduction to students who are exploring one of these concepts for presentations, term papers or dissertations.
